Are You Sabotaging Your Job Search With These Silly Mistakes?

Have you been looking for a new job for a while without any luck? If you’re an experienced professional with a strong track record, then you shouldn’t have a problem finding a new position…unless, of course, you’re making some common mistakes on your resume or in your cover letter.

What are they – and how can you avoid them? Here’s a look at 4:

#1: Using the wrong hiring manager’s name.

But you use it for multiple job applications. So when you mail out your letter, or hit the send button on your email, you forgot to change the hiring manager’s name from the last position you applied. Trust us, the hiring manager will notice. It may seem like a little mistake, but to them, it will demonstrate that you’re not detail oriented.

#2: Forgetting to swap out the company name.

Likewise, another similar mistake is forgetting to swap out the company name. If you just applied to a job at ABC Company, make sure you change the name in your cover letter when you’re then applying at XYZ Corporation. Again, it might seem like a small error, but it’s one that speaks volumes to hiring managers.

#3: Typos.

Cover letters and resumes should be perfect. However, if you make one small typo on your resume or in your cover letter, don’t sweat it too much. That said, if your resume is rife with grammatical and spelling errors, then you’re not going to make a good impression, regardless of how much experience you have.

Every job – whether it’s technical or in sales and marketing – requires strong communication skills. If you can’t communicate effectively without making a lot of mistakes, then a hiring manager is going to be concerned about your ability to articulate your thoughts in a clear way.

#4: Being too casual.

We’re so used to sending texts and posting status updates using short-hand language. However, don’t let this casual tone flow over into your business writings, including in your resume and cover letter. You don’t need to be overly formal and stufyf; simply take a friendly, conversational approach.

After you spend so much time creating the perfect cover letter and resume, don’t let a forgetful error like the ones outlined above sabotage your efforts.
