Pregnant & Looking for a New Job? Here’s What to Do

Having a baby is an exciting time – as is finding a new job. But when the timelines of these two major life events collide, it can leave for a bit of a stressful and uncertain experience.

So if you’re pregnant and looking for a new job, how do you handle the situation? Do you just wait until after your maternity leave to resume your hunt? Or should you keep at it until you find just the right opportunity?

Keep Looking

If you’re just pregnant, keep up your search. After all, you’ve got a long way to go and a lot could happen during that time – including you finding and starting a great new job.

Plus, when you really think about it, the job search isn’t only an opportunity for a hiring manager to evaluate you…it’s also a chance for you to assess a position and a company. So if you apply to a job, thinking it’s going to be a great fit, but go to an interview and realize the culture just isn’t right for you, then that’s one more company you can scratch off your list. And again, you’re simply trying to assess whether an opportunity is right for you. Many of them won’t be, which is why it’s pointless to bring your pregnancy up in the beginning.

When to Talk About It

If you do get a job offer, then it’s time to disclose your pregnancy. Even if you won’t be showing for a while, a hiring manager will feel duped by you if they find out shortly after that you are pregnant and need to take off three months of maternity leave. Under law, pregnancy is not a reason they can’t hire you. But not disclosing this kind of critical information could impact your future career success at the company because your new boss will see you as less than honest.

Plus, during the compensation negotiation process, you’re going to want to ask about maternity leave, which would look a little odd if your new employer doesn’t know you’re pregnant. It’s best to be upfront and also be ready to answer questions about when you think you’ll be taking off and returning.
