Workplace Morale: Why it Matters So Much

When it comes to your day, you’re focused on managing workers, customers, projects and all the little details and decisions that come your way. However, are you also focused on the bigger picture in terms of employee morale? If you’re not, then you’re missing out on an important opportunity to positively impact your team and your company, as well.

Consider these statistics from a recent Gallup poll. With high morale and improved engagement:

  • There’s 21% greater profitability
  • Employees are 4.6 times more likely to feel empowered to work at peak performance
  • 89% of workers at companies that support well-being initiatives are more likely to recommend their company as a good place to work

On the flip side, when morale runs low and employees are dissatisfied at work, it impacts bottom lines in a big way. In fact, disengaged employees cost U.S. companies up to $550 billion a year.

So if you’re not consistently working toward improving morale and engagement, you could wind up losing out. To help you in the process, here are some tips to put to use:

Assess current morale.

Before you begin, figure out where you are in terms of morale. You can do this by talking to your employees or by conducting a survey that gets submitted anonymously, so employees are encouraged to be honest.

Open up communication.

When it comes to morale, communication is key. If your employees feel out of the loop or blindsided by decisions, they’re not going to trust you and they’re going to grow disengaged quickly. That’s why communicating with them regularly and openly – about the good, the bad and the ugly – is so important and healthy for your company.

Recognize and reward employees.

Employees want to know that you see how hard they’re working and value their contributions. You can do this by words of praise and encouragement, as well as through rewards initiatives. This not only recognizes high-performing employees, but encourages other team members to work harder.

Invest in your people.

When you offer training and development opportunities to your employees, they’ll feel more valued and be more skilled. It’s a win for you both and will improve loyalty and morale on the team.
