Even though the new year is in full swing, you can still set a career goal for the remainder of it. Whether you want to get a raise, earn a promotion, find a new job, or work better hours, now’s still a great time to set a goal that’s important to you and start working toward achieving it. Here are a few questions to ask yourself to get started.
Where do I want to improve or what do I want to accomplish?
Think about the last year and what disappointed you about it. What areas do you wish you could perform better or do something new? When you ask yourself these kinds of questions, you can identify where you’re off track and choose a target to move toward.
What can I do now to work toward that goal?
For instance, if your goal is to get promoted, now’s the time let your boss know you’re interested in taking a step up. Ask him or her what skills or abilities you’ll need to advance. They can also give you feedback and insight into your performance and which areas to focus on in order to achieve your goal.
If you want a better work-life balance, on the other hand, how can you get there? Are you able to negotiate a different schedule with your current boss? Or do you need to start a job search and find a more flexible opportunity in the year ahead?
What resources can help me?
Do you want to work with a recruiter to help you find a new job? Does signing up for an online class to earn a certification or learn a new skill make sense? Is there an in-house mentoring program or online training program at your company to participate in? Think about the steps you’ll need to take and the resources that will help you along the way. Also, find out about any deadlines, such as when you need to sign up for a training program, so you don’t miss important ones and have to wait until the next year.
How long will it take?
Setting a timeline will help you stay motivated toward reaching your goal. This way, you won’t procrastinate or put action steps off. Just make sure that it’s realistic, so you set yourself up for success.
